This painting is one of the first in the imaginary topographic series. This painting's shapes were inspired by the enlarging, irregular shapes of the Sea Smoke in that series, which began to resemble continents. After laying down the first green layer on the red background, each subsequent layer was applied to leave the edges of the earlier layers exposed. This technique creates a terraced effect, reinforcing the topographical concept.
The process of layering and revealing edges not only emphasizes the contour lines but also enhances the visual depth of the piece. This method allows the painting to evoke the feeling of a three-dimensional landscape, bridging the gap between abstract shapes and real-world topography. Through this series, I explore how imaginary and real landscapes can intersect, creating a unique visual language that speaks to both natural and conceptual forms.
This piece was part of the "FOUND HORIZONS: Imagined Topographies" exhibition at the JHP Art Gallery.
