This painting was created using both thick and thin paint applications to depict competing perspectives. The sky features thick yellow impasto, scribed back to reveal the turquoise underpainting, creating an expected receding perspective. In contrast, the dark foreground, also scribed to the transparent turquoise underpainting, represents water. However, the vertical scribing and acidic yellow drybrush marks introduce a stacked perspective that subverts the expectation of linear perspective.
By layering these techniques, I aim to challenge the viewer’s perception and encourage a deeper engagement. The thick and thin paint, along with contrasting perspectives, creates a visual tension that invites contemplation of how we interpret and understand spatial relationships. This series continues my exploration of how different techniques and perspectives can coexist and interact within a single composition, offering a multifaceted view of the landscape.
This piece is more grounded than others in the series.
This piece was part of the "FOUND HORIZONS: Imagined Topographies" exhibition at the JHP Art Gallery.
