oil on cradled wood panel
24 x 24 x 1.75 in
Part color study and part metaphor, this painting is created in an atypical manner. The areas above and below the horizon line are painted simultaneously, using only two main complementary colors to distinguish the sea and sky. The wispy shapes of white layered over black represent the atomization of water into the atmosphere, symbolizing the interaction between archetypal/alchemical elements in natural form (in this case, water and air).
This technique forces a direct interaction between the two colors, highlighting the delicate balance and constant exchange between sea and sky (or water and air). The layered textures add depth and complexity, highlighting subtle transitions and interconnectedness between monolithic ideas.
This piece is a testament to the transformative power of color and form in capturing the essence of nature's processes.
This piece was part of the "FOUND HORIZONS: Imagined Topographies" exhibition at the JHP Art Gallery.
