oil on cradled wood panel
12 x 12 x 0.75 in

This small painting utilizes several layers in diverse ways to build up a rich texture. Complementary color choices enhance luminosity. The design element of equally spaced edges between subsequent layers references the reverse applique technique found in Central American textiles known as Molas.

I was introduced to Molas during a museum exhibition in grade school, and their unique visual qualities have haunted me ever since. This piece plays with those elements, integrating the structured layering and vibrant contrasts characteristic of Molas. Through this approach, the painting not only explores color and texture but also pays homage to the enduring influence of traditional textile art on my creative process.

This piece was part of the "FOUND HORIZONS: Imagined Topographies" exhibition at the JHP Art Gallery.
