Having lived near the prairies of Kansas and Missouri for decades, I was always amazed at the intense blue-green color of the sprouting native grasses, especially little Bluestem. In this painting, the surface of the soil represents another type of horizon through which the germinated plants rise.

This piece captures the vibrant energy of new growth and the dynamic interaction between the earth and emergence. The thick, textured layers and vibrant colors evoke the lushness of the prairies, while the scribing and layering techniques emphasize the process of germination.

This painting celebrates the resilience and beauty of native grasses, drawing inspiration from the natural landscapes that have deeply influenced my work.

This piece was part of the "FOUND HORIZONS: Imagined Topographies" exhibition at the JHP Art Gallery.
