Sunshine Fog captures the merging of water and sky in much the same way as the Sea Smoke paintings do (which can be seen here). The shapes traverse the horizon, reminiscent of vapor rising and blending into the atmosphere. These forms have the capacity of appearing either solid, resembling land masses in the distance, or wispy, evoking the fog of its title.
Rich textures emphasize a thoughtfulness, in which the medium itself constitutes the qualia of the metaphysical. This piece stands out within the series by emphasizing the rarefied and blended nature of these elements. Viewers are invited to contemplate the transient and interconnected aspects at a completely different scale.
Thus, the topography series is intended to be a completely nuanced exploration of how we perceive and relate to our environment.
This piece was part of the "FOUND HORIZONS: Imagined Topographies" exhibition at the JHP Art Gallery.
